Salty, Sweet, and So Healthy!

It’s those mid-week sugar cravings that get me every time. And believe me, I’m human, I do give into them! But here’s the catch – I don’t eat any refined or processed sugars. I know I talk about this a lot, but it’s a huge component of my blog and most of my recipes. I love sugar, I love treats, but I absolutely hate how they make me feel. For me cutting out sugar was never about losing weight or hoping to banish cellulite, it was for the sole purpose of just feeling better.

So to answer a question a receive almost daily, this is how I satisfy my sugar cravings. I make some kind of sweet treat (weekly), using ingredients that will both benefit me and make me feel as good as they taste. I never want to compromise taste for how it makes me feel, because it’s just never worth it. I love using raw cocoa/cacao powders, dried fruits, honey, nuts (nut butter), and even cinnamon in place of sugar. These are all natural, good for you ingredients that will supply the body with nutrients.

With that being said, let me take a moment to introduce these Trail Mix Brownie Clusters! They are pretty much everything I just mentioned, plus a few more great ingredients. These brownie clusters could not represent my sweet tooth remedy any better. They are decadent, rich, sweet, and crunchy – four adjectives you wouldn’t normally use to describe a healthy treat! I already can’t wait to have a few tonight after dinner! I hope you love them as much as we do

Trail Mix Toppings

This recipe is definitely a use what you love and use what you have kind of deal. I threw together just about everything I had in my pantry including flax seeds, raisins, almonds, and even some granola! Once you have the brownie base down, these clusters can be completely your own to add whatever you would like on top. I even thought about doing peanut butter and pretzels, which might still be in the works! Here’s what I used:

  • Raisins, dried mixed fruit, pecans, almonds, granola, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds

{ When buying dried fruit, be sure to check the ingredients label! Most companies will use sugar (including organic cane sugar) to make their products taste “better.” Just be sure to buy fruit that only has that fruit as the ingredient! }

Combine the brownie layer ingredients in a large mixing bowl, and mix until a dough ball forms. The texture should resemble a softened cookie dough, if it is too runny, add in a bit more cocoa powder until a dough forms.

Roll into 8 medium sized balls and flatten evenly with hand or the bottom of a glass. Next, gently add your toppings and press down slightly making sure the brownie layer and toppings do combine. Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes to allow everything to set in place!
